HOLOFOLD

INNOVATION AND

THE UNKNOWN

OVERVIEW

PROBLEM

OPPORTUNITY

The Holofold was created in response to a brief that asked to produce an innovative outcome inciting positive change to the climate catastrophe. The Holofold is the first eco-friendly e-paper tablet that projects holograms, folds 360°, has dual screens on the front and back, whilst reducing paper waste.

Research shows that Universities and Offices consume and waste copious amounts of paper, and a lot of this paper, due to laziness, is not recycled. Academics and office workers are conscious of the environmental impact paper waste has and are open to changes like switching to paper alternatives, however they are concerned with the costs and challenges that may come with this switch.

This provides a great oppurtunity to create a cost-effective solution that not only decreases, or even gets rid of all paper waste, but provides an advanced and elevated experience from regular paper use.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING NOW AND HAPPENING FAST

LOOKING INTO MY TARGET USERS

I began investigating into my audience - people who waste the most paper - this includes office workers, academics and institutions.

63% of users strongly agree that deforestation is a serious and immediate cause

71% of people would consider buying/using alternatives to paper of a similar quality

I was able to create an affinity diagram from this. This answered many questions from how many people recycle, why they do not recycle, do they consider the impacts of paper waste, their paper consumption and so on. I began to notice the pain points I would need to address and work on to create an innovative alternative to paper, targeting the needs of my users.

BRAINSTORMING

I began to ideate, using methods like crazy 8's and mind-mapping, to come up with a solution that is innovative and forward-thinking whilst also meeting the needs of my target audience. This led to two ideas:

  • Holographic documents

  • Creating some sort of re-usable electronic paper (like a Kindle)

It then clicked… what if I combine the two ideas! This led to my final idea:

A e-paper tablet which can project documents/your screen as a hologram in front of you.

BRINGING THE IDEA TO LIFE

Now it was time for the design process to start. How was I going to execute my tablet in a way that is different to existing products?

I sketched and designed a tablet which is slim and sleek, but also has standout features, including the ability to fold 360 degrees. It also has a hologram attachment which can be detached from the tablet, and placed anywhere desired. Now that is something not seen before!

I then moved onto designing an intuitive and engaging interface for the tablet, using Figma. This went through many iterations before I had a finalised design and set of features that ensured my target users would not miss using regular paper.

THE KEY FEATURES

With the prototype complete, I have created the perfect solution to paper waste for office workers and academics, that provides added benefits to their work-life. Introducing the Holofold.

Home Page

Where the user can navigate all of the Holofold's features.

Notes

Where users can view or create sketches, notes and sticky notes from a variety of starter templates. And access all their files/documents.

Hologram

Users can choose to project a document or their screen from here and also access their hologram settings, from the colour tone, brightness, opacity and projection angle. A quick-access projection button is available at all times in the top right corner.

Apps and App Store

Where users can view their applications and access the store for more - limited to educational apps, tools and aids to increase focus in the workplace.

Library

Users can access books and textbooks here.

REFLECTIONS AND LOOKING AHEAD

I am very proud of the outcome and pleased with myself for developing new skills in 3D design and video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro). I learnt a lot about how my paper use and waste can have huge effects on the environment. This was a tough project in terms of the number of elements that went into producing the final outcome, from the extensive research to the 3D designing and texturing of the Holofold tablet, but it produced a very rewarding outcome and a project that I am super pleased with, and proud to show off.

Looking ahead, I am excited to further develop my design skillset and explore creating experiences that promote positive changes to the user and the climate!
